HERE WE GO AGAIN...

Two civic organizations spearheaded by local businessman David Eller have laid out before the city commission a proposal to replace the Deerfield Beach municipal beach parking lot with a commercial plaza and four story parking garage.

This "plaza" would contain shops and cafes, a "water feature," band shell or amphitheater, and fire and public safety facilities.

Because the commission may not lawfully transfer valuable public property to private interests without voter approval, a referendum was set for November 7th to gauge citizen reaction to this proposal.

The proposal calls for leasing up to 30 per cent of the 4.6 acre tract as commercial/office/retail space. Proponents call this "limited" commercial development. But...

Even if you're Gored and Bushed by Election 2000, it's important that all citizens vote on this issue. The future of Deerfield Beach is once again in our hands....

If we pass on this one the city commission will almost certainly hand a valuable part of our beach over to commercial developers who want to build a shopping center on our beachfront.

Concept Plan for Commercial Plaza

Although touted as a park, the concept plan clearly shows that the proposed "Ocean Park" is mostly a parking garage and shopping center. The area reserved for a "park" occupies approximately 1.5 acres. About half of this is space for the amphitheater. This means that the actual "park" would occupy a space (designated by the black box) equivalent to the area of about three ordinary residential lots.

At a price tag of over $10 million this could well be the most expensive park in the country!
